Aari Embroidery in Delhi — Chain Stitch Couture & Custom Designs
Aari embroidery — the ancient chain stitch technique using a hooked needle — is the foundation of India's most intricate beadwork and couture embellishment. At Le Wraps, our skilled aari artisans create mesmerizing patterns with beads, sequins, and threads that bring any garment to life.

Origin
Kashmir, India (12th century)
The Heritage of Aari Embroidery
Aari embroidery takes its name from the 'aari' — a sharp, hooked needle used to create continuous chain stitches from below the fabric. Originating in Kashmir for crewel embroidery on shawls, the technique spread across India and evolved to incorporate beads, sequins, stones, and metallic threads. Today, aari work is the backbone of Indian couture — almost every high-end bridal lehenga and designer garment uses aari technique for bead and sequin application. The speed and precision of aari work allows artisans to create elaborate all-over patterns that would take much longer with a regular needle.
The Technique Behind Aari Embroidery
The artisan stretches fabric on a wooden frame (adda) and works from below using the hooked aari needle. The needle pierces the fabric, catches the thread/bead from below, and pulls it through in a continuous chain stitch. This allows rapid, even embroidery with beads, sequins, and threads attached simultaneously. Skilled aari workers can create incredibly fine, detailed patterns — from delicate floral scrolls to heavy all-over beadwork — with remarkable speed and consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions — Aari Embroidery
What's the difference between aari and zardozi?
Aari uses a hooked needle for chain stitching (ideal for beads/sequins). Zardozi uses metallic threads and bullion wire for raised, textured embroidery. We often combine both on a single garment.
Can aari work include Swarovski crystals?
Yes — aari technique is perfect for applying crystals, rhinestones, and glass beads. We use genuine Swarovski for premium pieces.
Is aari embroidery heavy?
It depends on the materials — thread aari is very light, while bead and crystal aari adds weight. We balance coverage and material choice for comfortable wear.
How long does aari work take?
Simple accent work takes 2-3 days. Full bridal lehenga coverage with bead aari takes 4-8 weeks.
