NRI Bride Guide

Shipping a Bridal Lehenga from India: Customs, Duties & Insurance Guide

Country-by-country breakdown of duties, taxes, transit times and the paperwork that protects your couture investment in transit.

    Step-by-Step

    The step-by-step process

A practical walk-through refined over a decade of dressing NRI brides.

    1. 1

      Final video approval

Before any shipment, we share a 360° video and high-res photos of the finished lehenga. Dispatch only happens after your written approval.

    2. 2

      Heirloom packaging

The lehenga is folded with acid-free tissue, placed in a silk-lined garment bag, then sealed in our reinforced fabric outer box. Embroidered pieces are layered to prevent crushing.

    3. 3

      Customs invoice prepared

We prepare a detailed itemised invoice (lehenga, blouse, dupatta separately) for accurate customs valuation. Duties are usually lower when items are itemised vs. bundled.

    4. 4

      DHL pickup & insurance

DHL Express collects from our atelier with full declared-value insurance. Tracking number and insurance certificate emailed to you within 2 hours.

    5. 5

      Customs clearance

Most NRI destinations clear in 24–48 hours. DHL contacts you for any duty payment via their portal — usually credit card or bank transfer.

    6. 6

      Delivery & inspection

Door-to-door delivery to your address with signature on receipt. Inspect immediately — any (extremely rare) transit damage is covered by insurance, photographed and refunded.

    USA: 5–7 days, ~6–12% duty

DHL Express delivers to all US ZIPs in 5–7 working days. US import duty on women's apparel ranges 6.5–12% depending on fibre composition (silk is on the lower end). There is no federal sales tax on imports. Duty is collected by DHL — pay via their online portal before they release the package, or set up a DHL account in advance for faster clearance.

We ship most often to NJ (Edison, Jersey City), NY (Queens, Long Island), the SF Bay Area (Fremont, San Jose), Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and the DC metro.

    UK: 4–6 days, ~12% duty + 20% VAT

UK customs charge ~12% duty plus 20% VAT on declared value of women's apparel. We declare honestly and itemise so HMRC charges are correctly calculated. Duty is payable to DHL on delivery via their UK portal.

We ship most often to London (Wembley, Harrow, Southall, Hounslow, Ilford), Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester and Glasgow.

    Canada: 5–7 days, ~16–18% duty + GST/HST

CBSA applies ~16–18% duty + GST/HST (5–15% depending on province) on declared apparel value. Itemised invoices help reduce assessed value. We ship most often to the GTA (Brampton, Mississauga, Markham), Greater Vancouver (Surrey, Burnaby), Calgary and Edmonton.

    UAE: 2–3 days, 5% duty

Just 5% flat customs duty on apparel above AED 1,000. The shortest transit window of any market we serve. Most Dubai brides receive their lehenga within 72 hours of dispatch.

    Australia, Singapore, Germany & EU

Australia: 6–8 days, 5% duty + 10% GST on parcels over A$1,000. Singapore: 3–4 days, no duty but 9% GST on declared value above S$400. Germany & EU: 5–7 days, ~12% duty + 19–25% VAT depending on country. We provide precise estimates in your local currency before dispatch.

    What insurance actually covers

DHL declared-value insurance covers loss, theft and transit damage up to the full invoiced amount. In 30 years and over 5,000 international shipments, Le Wraps has had three insurance claims — all paid in full within 14 days. Fragile embroidery (kundan, mirror work) is reinforced with internal tissue layering and has never sustained transit damage in our shipments.

    Frequently asked questions

    How much does shipping cost?

International courier and insurance for a bridal lehenga (typical box weight 4–6 kg) ranges from $80 to $180 depending on country. We share an exact quote with your final invoice.

Can I avoid customs duty by under-declaring?

No — and we won't. Under-declared shipments are flagged, delayed weeks at customs, and risk seizure plus a fine. Honest declaration is faster and protects your insurance cover.

What if my lehenga is damaged in transit?

DHL declared-value insurance covers full repair or remake. Photograph the package and contents immediately on receipt — claim filed within 7 days, paid within 14.

Can I have it delivered to a different address than mine?

Yes. We can ship to a parent, sibling, in-law or workplace if it's more convenient — just confirm the recipient's full name, phone and address on your final invoice.

Do you offer faster shipping than DHL Express?

DHL Express is already the fastest insured option. For ultra-urgent cases (less than 2 weeks before wedding) we can dispatch by DHL Time Definite — adds $50–100 but guarantees a specific delivery date.
