Mirror Work Embroidery in Delhi — Shisha & Abhla Artistry
Mirror work — known as shisha or abhla — is one of India's most eye-catching textile arts. Tiny mirrors stitched into fabric create a dazzling play of light that makes every outfit sparkle. At Le Wraps, we craft contemporary mirror work designs on lehengas, kurtas, and couture pieces.

The Heritage of Mirror Work
Mirror embroidery (shisha in Hindi, abhla in Gujarati) has its roots in the folk traditions of Gujarat and Rajasthan, where small pieces of mica or glass were stitched into fabric to ward off evil spirits and attract light. Over centuries, the craft evolved from rustic tribal art to a refined embroidery technique used in high fashion. The iconic Rabari and Kutchi communities of Gujarat are legendary mirror work artisans. In modern Indian fashion, mirror work has become one of the most sought-after embellishments for sangeet outfits, festive wear, and contemporary lehengas.
The Technique Behind Mirror Work
Traditional mirror work involves cutting thin glass or mica into circles or shapes, placing them on fabric, and securing them with a framework of stitches — typically buttonhole, herringbone, or cretan stitch — that hold the mirror in place while creating a decorative border. Modern techniques also include pre-backed mirrors with adhesive, though hand-stitched mirrors are more durable and authentic. Mirrors are combined with thread embroidery — chain stitch, cross stitch, and satin stitch — in colorful patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions — Mirror Work
Do the mirrors break or crack?
We use premium quality glass mirrors that resist cracking. They're also secured with robust stitching so even if one cracks, it stays in place.
Is mirror work suitable for bridal wear?
Mirror work is perfect for sangeet and mehendi lehengas. For the main wedding, it's often combined with zardozi or gota patti for a richer look.
Can mirrors be in shapes other than circles?
Yes — we use triangular, diamond, oval, and square mirrors for varied design effects.
Is mirror work heavy?
Mirror work is relatively lightweight — much lighter than zardozi or heavy bead work. It's very comfortable for dancing and festive events.
