    Origin

    Punjab, India (ancient, pre-Mughal)

    The Heritage of Phulkari

Phulkari (literally 'flower work') is Punjab's iconic embroidery tradition, practiced by women across the region for centuries. Traditionally, phulkari was embroidered by the women of the household on coarse cotton (khaddar) fabric using untwisted silk thread (pat) in the darning stitch. When the embroidery covered the entire fabric, hiding the base cloth, it was called 'bagh' (garden). Phulkari was an essential part of every Punjabi girl's trousseau and was created as a labor of love. Today, phulkari has been revived by fashion designers and is experiencing a renaissance in bridal and festive fashion.

    The Technique Behind Phulkari

Phulkari is worked from the reverse side of the fabric using darning stitch (running stitch on the wrong side creates long floats on the right side). This unique technique creates a flat, smooth surface of vibrant color on the front. The embroiderer works with untwisted silk thread (pat) that has a natural sheen. Designs are geometric — diamonds, triangles, squares, and chevrons — arranged in repeating patterns that create an optical illusion of depth. Color combinations are bold — orange, yellow, pink, green on deep maroon or black base.

    Frequently Asked Questions — Phulkari

Is phulkari suitable for bridal wear?

Phulkari dupattas are a must for Punjabi brides. Phulkari lehengas are stunning for sangeet, mehendi, and pre-wedding functions. For the main ceremony, phulkari can be combined with zardozi for a richer look.

Can phulkari be done on modern fabrics?

Traditionally done on khaddar, we now incorporate phulkari on georgette, silk, and even organza for lighter, contemporary garments.

How do I distinguish real phulkari from machine-made?

Real phulkari has visible stitches on the reverse, slight irregularities, and a distinctive silk thread sheen. Machine phulkari is perfectly uniform and uses synthetic thread.

    Is phulkari durable?

Hand-embroidered phulkari with quality silk thread is very durable and can last generations with proper care.
