The Bridal Fabric Deep Dive — Velvet, Banarasi, Raw Silk, Net, Organza & More

Bridal lehenga fabric deep dive — velvet Banarasi raw silk net organza brocade Delhi guide

    Why Fabric Decides the Wedding

Brides spend weeks choosing colour and embroidery, and often pick fabric in 10 minutes. This is backwards. Fabric decides drape, weight, season, photography, comfort, and longevity. Embroidery sits on top — but the fabric is the foundation. After working with every major bridal fabric over three decades at Le Wraps, here is the honest guide.

The 7 Major Bridal Lehenga Fabrics

    1. Velvet

The undisputed queen of winter weddings. Velvet has a deep, light-absorbing pile that makes embroidery — especially zardozi and dabka — look three-dimensional and royal.

  1. **Best season:** October to February
  2. **Best occasions:** Sangeet, evening wedding, reception
  3. **Best embroidery:** Zardozi, dabka, kundan, sequin clusters
  4. **Best colours:** Maroon, deep red, emerald, royal blue, plum, midnight black
  5. **Drape:** Heavy, structured, holds shape
  6. **Weight:** 8–12 kg for a full bridal lehenga
  7. **Care:** Dry-clean only, never iron directly, store flat
  8. **Bespoke price range:** ₹1,50,000 – ₹15,00,000+
  9. **Honest downside:** Hot in summer, heavy to dance in for long sangeets
  10. 2. Banarasi Silk

Heritage personified. Hand-woven in Varanasi, Banarasi silk has a structured weave with metallic zari motifs woven directly into the fabric. A true Banarasi lehenga doubles as an heirloom from day one.

  11. **Best season:** October to March
  12. **Best occasions:** Wedding ceremony, traditional pheras, family pujas
  13. **Best embroidery:** Often the woven motifs are the embroidery — minimal additional work needed
  14. **Best colours:** Red, magenta, gold, ivory, peacock blue
  15. **Drape:** Crisp, structured, falls in defined pleats
  16. **Weight:** 6–10 kg depending on zari density
  17. **Care:** Dry-clean, store with muslin between folds, airs annually
  18. **Bespoke price range:** ₹1,80,000 – ₹12,00,000+
  19. **Honest downside:** Less flexible silhouettes (best in classic A-line); heavy zari can scratch sensitive skin
  20. 3. Raw Silk

The all-rounder. Raw silk is structured, holds dye beautifully, photographs richly, and works across most wedding venues and seasons. If a bride is undecided, we steer her toward raw silk.

  21. **Best season:** Year-round (lighter weaves for summer, heavier for winter)
  22. **Best occasions:** Wedding, sangeet, reception
  23. **Best embroidery:** Almost everything — zardozi, gota patti, mirror, sequin, thread work
  24. **Best colours:** Every colour reads beautifully on raw silk
  25. **Drape:** Crisp with slight stiffness, perfect for structured silhouettes
  26. **Weight:** 5–9 kg
  27. **Care:** Dry-clean, can be steamed gently
  28. **Bespoke price range:** ₹85,000 – ₹8,00,000
  29. **Honest downside:** Wrinkles if folded incorrectly; needs a good steaming before wearing
  30. 4. Net (Tulle / French Net)

Modern, light, dramatic. Net allows embroidery to "float" because it is sheer — perfect for brides who want a contemporary look with maximum embellishment but no weight.

  31. **Best season:** Year-round (especially summer and outdoor weddings)
  32. **Best occasions:** Sangeet, reception, cocktail, mehendi
  33. **Best embroidery:** Sequin, mirror, gota patti, light kundan, pearl
  34. **Best colours:** Pastels (powder blue, blush pink, sage), ivory, mint, coral
  35. **Drape:** Flowy, romantic, photographs beautifully in motion
  36. **Weight:** 3–6 kg even with heavy embroidery (the lightest bridal option)
  37. **Care:** Gentle dry-clean, store hung not folded
  38. **Bespoke price range:** ₹85,000 – ₹6,00,000
  39. **Honest downside:** Snags easily on chairs, jewellery, even fingernails; cannot have heavy zardozi (the weight tears the net)
  40. 5. Organza

The poetic fabric. Organza has a slight crispness and translucency that makes lehengas look almost ethereal. It has surged in popularity since 2022 for daytime and outdoor weddings.

  41. **Best season:** Spring, monsoon, mild winter (avoid peak summer humidity)
  42. **Best occasions:** Day wedding, mehendi, intimate ceremonies, NRI weddings abroad
  43. **Best embroidery:** Thread embroidery, light sequin, hand-painted motifs, scalloped borders
  44. **Best colours:** Pastels (lavender, mint, peach, ivory), soft jewel tones
  45. **Drape:** Volumetric, holds shape, slightly stiff
  46. **Weight:** 4–7 kg
  47. **Care:** Dry-clean, never iron directly (use a press cloth)
  48. **Bespoke price range:** ₹95,000 – ₹5,50,000
  49. **Honest downside:** Slightly transparent — needs careful lining; can look "papery" in poor lighting
  50. 6. Tissue Silk

The luxurious lightweight. Tissue silk is an ultra-thin metallic-finish silk that catches light like nothing else. Often paired with another fabric (like a tissue silk dupatta over a raw silk lehenga).

  51. **Best season:** Year-round
  52. **Best occasions:** Daytime weddings, intimate ceremonies, brides who love light reflection
  53. **Best embroidery:** Minimal — the fabric does the work
  54. **Best colours:** Gold, ivory, champagne, rose gold, soft blush
  55. **Drape:** Lightweight, flowy, almost weightless
  56. **Weight:** 3–5 kg
  57. **Care:** Very delicate dry-clean, store hung
  58. **Bespoke price range:** ₹1,20,000 – ₹6,00,000
  59. **Honest downside:** Snags easily, not suitable for heavy embroidery, expensive per metre
  60. 7. Brocade

The textured royal. Brocade has raised woven motifs that give the fabric inherent texture — almost like built-in embroidery. Excellent for brides who want grandeur with minimal additional embellishment.

  61. **Best season:** October to February (winter, palace, evening)
  62. **Best occasions:** Sangeet, traditional ceremonies, evening receptions
  63. **Best embroidery:** Light additional gota patti or zari border (the brocade is the focus)
  64. **Best colours:** Gold, red, magenta, royal blue, emerald
  65. **Drape:** Structured, slightly stiff, photographs beautifully
  66. **Weight:** 7–10 kg
  67. **Care:** Dry-clean only, store with acid-free tissue
  68. **Bespoke price range:** ₹1,50,000 – ₹8,00,000
  69. **Honest downside:** Limited silhouette flexibility (best in A-line and kalidar); the woven texture limits embroidery options
  70. Fabric Comparison Cheat Sheet

    |--------|------------|-----------|-------|---------------|

How to Choose Your Fabric — The 5 Questions

  71. **What time of year is the wedding?** — Velvet for winter, organza/net for summer
  72. **What time of day?** — Heavy fabrics for evenings, light for day
  73. **Indoor or outdoor?** — Outdoor needs lighter weight & wind-resistant drape
  74. **What silhouette do you love?** — Mermaid needs structured fabrics; flowy A-lines work in net/organza
  75. **What feeling do you want?** — Royal/grand → velvet/brocade; Modern/ethereal → net/organza; Classic/timeless → Banarasi/raw silk
  76. The Combination Strategy

The best bridal lehengas often combine two fabrics for the perfect drape:

  77. **Raw silk skirt + organza dupatta** — structure with romance
  78. **Velvet bodice + net skirt** — opulence with movement
  79. **Banarasi silk lehenga + tissue silk dupatta** — heritage with light play
  80. **Brocade lehenga + plain silk blouse** — texture balanced with simplicity
  81. What We Recommend for Each Wedding Type

  82. **Traditional Punjabi wedding:** Velvet bridal + Banarasi silk for ceremony
  83. **Marwari Rajputi wedding:** Brocade or Banarasi silk in royal red/maroon
  84. **Bengali wedding:** Banarasi silk in red and gold (always)
  85. **South Indian wedding:** Kanjeevaram silk (in saree form)
  86. **Destination beach wedding:** Organza or net in pastels
  87. **Palace wedding (Udaipur/Jaipur):** Velvet, raw silk, or brocade in jewel tones
  88. **Hill station wedding:** Velvet with embroidered shawl
  89. **Modern intimate wedding:** Raw silk or organza in non-traditional colours
