Tilla Work in Delhi — Kashmiri Metallic Thread Embroidery
Tilla is Kashmir's metallic thread embroidery — fine gold or silver thread couched onto the fabric in flowing florals and paisleys. It brings a regal, flat shine that is perfect for winter weddings.

Origin
Kashmir
The Heritage of Tilla Work
Tilla work developed in Kashmir, where it decorated pherans, shawls and festive garments. Unlike the raised texture of zardozi, tilla lies flat against the fabric, creating elegant gold or silver outlines that suit wool, velvet and silk.
The Technique Behind Tilla Work
Metallic thread is laid on the surface along the drawn design and held in place by small stitches in a finer thread (couching). Because the metal thread stays on top of the fabric, tilla uses it efficiently and gives a smooth, even shine.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tilla Work
What is the difference between tilla and zardozi?
Tilla lies flat on the fabric and is couched in place, giving a smooth shine. Zardozi is raised and textured, built up with bullion wire, sequins and beads.
Is tilla work good for winter weddings?
Yes. It suits wool, velvet and heavy silk, which makes it a natural choice for Delhi's winter wedding season.
Can tilla be added to a suit I already have?
Often, yes, depending on the fabric. Bring the piece and we'll check whether it can take the work.
